For the people from Ratnagiri, PATWARDHAN HIGH SCHOOL is a well known educational Institution. This institution is contributing significantly to the cause of education in Ratnagiri and surrounding areas. In the recent ranking of the educational institutions conducted by R-ZAC, this institution has been ranked in the highest category of A+.
In the year 1902, Shri Keshvrao Patwardhan, along with some of his relatives and well-wishers, established an educational institute in ratnagiri, then named as PATWARDHAN MIDDLE SCHOOL, starting with only a handful of students. Due to the high standards of education, personal attention and discipline, this institution was well received by students and parents and was on a growth path. Conducting the classes at various rented places initialy, the school moved into a specious permanent location where the school and its other institutions are now located. During these the years, the school was re-named as PATWARDHAN HIGH SCHOOL. Earlier PATWARDHAN HIGH SCHOOL conducted classes from 5th to 11th (Old SSC) standards.
Subsequently, realizing the needs, the Mandal added new educational institutions and now we have educational facilities from the Play School to Senior College. We also have established certain add-on facilities, such Computer Education for our students from 1st to 10th standards, Gurukul, etc.
Shri Keshavrao Patwardhan was actively associated with the school, right from its inspection till his death in 1936. After his demise, his well-educated and trained sons, shri Shankarrao and Achyutrao Patwardhan ably carried on with his mission, till their retirement and even thereafter. All three put in untiring efforts in the growth of the school and in achieve respect and high standing for the school. Due to the dedicated efforts, personal attention, self-less vision and exemplary discipline in the school and the whole-hearted support of their team of teachers, Patwardhan High School has been a well known and highly respected educational institution in Kokan area and this attracted more and more students to this school.
We have 1731 students in Patwardhan High School for the academic year 2017-18. In the journey so far, the school has achieved good results at the SSC and HSC exams. These results for the last few years are as follows:

It may be observed that we have had achieved consistently good results in SSC examinations and results for HSC examinations have shown upward trend and have now stabilized at a very good level.
From time to time, students from Patwardhan High School have achieved merit ranks, like merit list ranks in SSC, state/national level rankings in sports, good results in Scholarship Examinations, etc.
In the academic year 2017-2018 the total student strength in all institutions together is 3775 and that for year 2018-19 it is 3549.
University of Bombay (Mumbai University) has granted permission to Bharat Shikshan Mandal to start a degree (senior) college for Arts, Commerce and Science, from academic year 2016-17 and the college is affiliated to University of Bombay. Although the permissions were received in August, 2016, we have started the Arts and Commerce streams from August 17, 2016. Since the college was started late, the number of students enrolling in our college was as expected, inadequate. We have stabilized the working of the college in 2017-18. We had only41 students for Arts and Commerce streams for the academic year, 2016-17 for the reasons mentioned above. Since we have started enrollment for year 2017-18 along with other colleges, we could get a much better response and total student intake strength has improved to 42/128/17 for Arts/Commerce/science streams, respectively and together to 187 students. The students strength for the academic year 2018-19 the student strength is 356.
In the year 1974-75 new patter of 10+2 education was introduced. With increased demand for the +2 classes and for the convenience primarily of our own students passing 10th, the Mandal decided to start junior college for the Arts stream in the year1983-84. A generous donation from shri-Dattaram Shankar Natekar, in the memory of his son, Shri Nandu Natekar, helped start the Junior College for Arts. For academic year 2017-18, we have 180 students in our Arts Jr College and that for the year 2018-19 it is 170.
We were unable to start the Commerce and Science streams simultaneously, due to paucity of funds. However, although late, we started the Commerce stream in 2007 and the Science stream in 2008, with well-equipped laboratories.
We were unable to start commerce and science streams simultaneously, due to paucity of funds. A generous donation of Rs seven Lac from Shri Rameshji Keer helped start the science stream. The science stream was started in 2008, with well equipped laboratories. For academic year 2017-18, we had 141 students in our Science Jr College and that fr the year 2018-19 the intake is 127.
The Commerce stream was stared in year 2007. We received a commitment for a generous donation of Rs eight Lac from Shri Shashank Gandhi, son of late Vijayalaxmi and Shrikrishan Gandhi, for naming the Commerce Junior College in the memory of his mother and father
For academic year 2017-18, we have 321 students in our Commerce Jr College and that for the year 2018-19 it is 319.
We have a total of 642 students in our Junior Colleges for the academic year 2017-18, in spite of the fact that the Science and Commerce streams have been started only a few years back. The student strength for the year 2018-19 is 616.
For enlargement of educational activities, and as a back-up for the secondary school and to meet the demands from parents, we started primary school in the year1987. A generous donation from shri Suhasrao Agashe, in the memory of his father, helped immensely in the construction of the school building. Our Primary school is one of the leading schools for primary education in Ratnagiri. The demand for seats is increasing year by year and to cater to this, we will have to add new divisions by constructing additional classrooms and create necessary infrastructure. In the year 2017-18, the Primary school has 621 students and that for the year 2018-19 e have 616 students on its rolls.
In response to consistently increasing demand of parents to provide pre-primary (KG) facility, Mandal decided to start pre-primary classes from 1987. Generous donations from shri Ramvallabhji Biyani, in the memory of his mother, provide necessary impetus to star this school. We have 222 students on rolls of the pre-primary school in the year 2017-18 and that for the year 2018-19 it is 211.
The changing life-style, smaller families, with both working parents, we realized the need for a properly organized and professionally managed Play School. We started the Play school in year 2007. Although quite new, we have 25 kids in this play school for 2017-18 and 19 for the year 2018-19.
Computer literacy and proficiency are essential needs of the new information/web based technology in day-to-day life. Mandal was keen to provide a platform to its students to enable and enthuse them for computer learning. While the new school building was constructed, in 2000-2002, a generous donation of Rs-10 Lacs was received from Dr Shradhanand Thakur, specifically to create facilities for computer learning. This donation is in addition other generous donations received from Thakur/Deshpande families. An exclusive computer learning facility is now provided both in the Primary and the Secondary schools with adequate PCs and trained staff, and is operational since 2003-04. A total of 1318 students from the primary and the secondary schools had enrolled themselves for this facility in the year 2017-18.the corresponding strength for 2018-19 is 1312.
Shri Achyutrao Patwardhan took keen interest and was desirous of starting a school based on the ancient Gurukul concept of education, with focus on overall development of students, not restricted to only prescribed curriculum. Unfortunately he could not realize his dream during his lifetime. The idea was still alive with some teachers and members of the Managing Committee who had shared his thoughts and who strongly believed in its merits. Prominently among them was Shri R P Jog, who had worked with the school for over 40 years. After studying the working of Gurukul schools, with a lot of planning and preparations, and preparing a blue-print of the total programme for each standard, the Mandal started Gurukul in 2004-05, covering progressively, 5th to 10th standards. Besides the regular class subjects the students undergo a variety of programmes and experiences in the extended school hours. One can definitely experience a delightfully and distinctly different personality of these students. We have a total of 160 students enrolled in this programme, for the year 2017-18.and the strength for 2018-19 is 152. The first batch of our Gurukul students appearing for SSC in 2009-10 has secured 100% results. The results for the subsequent years are also 100% or close to 100%.
